{"id":2547,"date":"2010-12-24T01:00:46","date_gmt":"2010-12-24T09:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lighthousebc.com\/beacon\/?p=2547"},"modified":"2017-09-05T23:26:26","modified_gmt":"2017-09-06T06:26:26","slug":"weekly-links-christmas-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lighthousebc.com\/beacon\/2010\/12\/24\/weekly-links-christmas-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekly Links (Christmas Edition 2010)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Stephen Rodgers<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hello again everyone! \u00a0Welcome to a special Christmas edition of the Weekly Links. \u00a0There&#8217;s enough good stuff here that I&#8217;ve made the decision to break it up topically for you so that you can work through it in smaller chunks. \u00a0And you should have plenty of time to do so, because the Beacon is taking next week off! \u00a0So this (and Spurgeon&#8217;s comments tomorrow), will be all you hear from us for a week. \u00a0So bookmark this, celebrate Christmas, and come back to do some serious reading when you get the chance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Story of Christmas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before we go to far, let&#8217;s take a moment to remember what Christmas is all about.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kevin DeYoung has an excellent 4-part series on the Christmas story that can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.thegospelcoalition.org\/kevindeyoung\/2012\/12\/25\/a-christmas-story\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Al Mohler writes that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albertmohler.com\/2009\/12\/21\/where-does-the-story-of-christmas-begin\/\">the story of Christmas began long before<\/a> the first chapter of Matthew.<\/li>\n<li>CJ Mahaney reminds us that in a certain sense, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sovereigngraceministries.org\/blogs\/cj-mahaney\/post\/2010\/12\/17\/Disturbing-Christmas.aspx\" class=\"broken_link\">Christmas is our fault<\/a>, and we should be disturbed about that. \u00a0Joyful as well&#8230;but disturbed.<\/li>\n<li>John Starke has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegospelcoalition.org\/article\/the-most-high-god-who-became-like-us\/\">an article in a similar vein<\/a> where he contrasts the root of original sin (wanting to become like God: Genesis 3:5) with Christ&#8217;s incarnation, where He became like us!<\/li>\n<li>Frank Turk explains how Christmas in one sense isn&#8217;t about love and joy and thanks&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/index.php?permalink=blogs&amp;blog=firstthoughts&amp;year=2009&amp;month=12&amp;entry_permalink=with-interest\">but about the wrath of God.<\/a> And if you don&#8217;t understand that, perhaps that&#8217;s why it&#8217;s so hard for you to be loving and joyful and thankful?<\/li>\n<li>Mike Crosper tells us that Christmas is properly understood as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegospelcoalition.org\/article\/christmas-the-hinge-of-history\/\">the hinge of history<\/a>. \u00a0I don&#8217;t think he&#8217;s wrong at all.<\/li>\n<li>Douglas Wilson also reminds us that Christmas, Good Friday, and Easter are all connected events, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dougwils.com\/Topical\/a-christmas-eve-invitation.html\">that the incarnation is a necessary part of the Gospel,<\/a> and that the offer He came to make possible is still available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Virgin Birth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What about the virgin birth? \u00a0Does it really matter?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Al Mohler has several articles on the topic of the virgin birth. \u00a0He traces the roots of the denial of this\u00a0doctrine\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.albertmohler.com\/2008\/12\/23\/can-a-christian-deny-the-virgin-birth\/\">through history and modernity<\/a>, shows how it has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albertmohler.com\/2010\/12\/22\/must-we-believe-the-virgin-birth-4\/\">recently come under attack again<\/a>, and then pens a follow-up to that piece showing how clearly the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albertmohler.com\/2004\/12\/20\/the-doctrine-of-the-virgin-birth-under-attack-again-2\/\">battle lines have been drawn on this issue<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In case you missed it, last week our very own <a href=\"http:\/\/lighthousebc.com\/sermons\/feed\/podcast\/\" class=\"broken_link\">Pastor Patrick gave a sermon<\/a> on this very subject.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Christmas Apologetics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes people like to argue about what really happened at Christmas. \u00a0It&#8217;s good to have answers for them (1 Peter 3:15).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are a lot of topics and subjects related to Christmas apologetics, so I&#8217;ll just give you a solid place to start: Triablogue has several wrap-up posts dealing with Christmas apologetics from <a href=\"http:\/\/triablogue.blogspot.com\/2008\/11\/christmas-resources.html\">2008<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/triablogue.blogspot.com\/2009\/11\/resources-on-christmas.html\">2009<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/triablogue.blogspot.com\/2010\/11\/material-on-christmas-apologetics.html\">2010<\/a>. \u00a0That&#8217;s one of the best places you could start. \u00a0And if you have more questions about historical Christmas events, alleged pagan traditions, the use of December 25th, etc&#8230;their blog is still one of the best places you could start. \u00a0Period.<\/li>\n<li>I love those guys.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Christmas Treats and Trials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Christmas can be a wonderful time, but it also comes with some unique challenges regarding relationships and family.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CJ Mahaney instructs us that of all the gifts that you can give at Christmas, one that is commonly overlooked is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sovereigngraceministries.org\/blogs\/cj-mahaney\/post\/2010\/12\/10\/A-Gift-Idea.aspx\" class=\"broken_link\">the gift of Christian speech.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Tony Reinke and Chris Castaldo both focus on the fact that Christmas is an opportunity to be with family&#8230;although that can be difficult at times. \u00a0Tony re-purposes a sermon from the inimitable Spurgeon on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sovereigngraceministries.org\/blogs\/cj-mahaney\/post\/2010\/12\/14\/Spurgeon-on-sharing-the-gospel-during-Christmas.aspx\" class=\"broken_link\">how to approach our interaction with family<\/a>, and Tony has some other good advice on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegospelcoalition.org\/article\/christmas-among-family-four-suggestions\/\">how to balance the real meaning of Christmas and celebrating Christmas with unbelieving family<\/a>. \u00a0Knowing many of the people at our church are in this position, I think both will be helpful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Santa Claus, Christmas Trees, and Other Holiday Cheer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Is it wrong for a Christian to celebrate Christmas?
