I started coming out to Lighthouse after I graduated from UCSF in 2009 and moved to San Diego to work. I heard about Lighthouse through my brother who is a student at the Master’s seminary.   I want to join single staff because I want to encourage like-minded singles to run the Christian race together with perseverance.
  • Hobbies: piano, guitar, hiking, and photography

Trevor & Marina Hayes

Trevor:

My wife and I moved to San Diego last year. We didn’t have to look
anywhere else after our first Sunday at LBC. Patrick’s Biblical teaching and the member’s genuine love towards one another quickly convinced us that Lighthouse was a church for us. This is going to be our first year at Singles and I’m looking forward getting to know single men and growing in Christ together.

  • Hobbies: reading, nature like activities (hiking, hunting), technology.
  • Favorite Christian book: Trusting God by Jerry Bridges.
  • Favorite Bible Verse: book of Ecclesiastes, “All is vanity and Striving after wind”.

Marina:

Before moving to San Diego last year I found the LBC website and checked it out. Reading about different ministries, seeing pictures and learning about Lighthouse mission and decision, I wanted to become a part of that church. Our first Sunday here was everything we hoped for; there was no reason to look for other churches. The fact that Patrick and some other guys came over and helped us on our moving day, showed me that people at LBC had a heart for service. I’m looking forward to developing new relationships with single ladies at church. I hope we can serve each other and grow together for the glory of God.

  • Hobbies: music, photography, anything crafty. I also love reading and experiencing new things (like new foods!)
  • Favorite Christian book: Holiness by J.C. Ryle
  • Favorite Bible verse: one of many, PS 119:11.

Grindley, Kyle

I moved to San Diego in 2002 to study engineering. I originally came  to LBC in 2005, looking to find a church that would hold me accountable in my walk and provide the examples of solid godly men for me to follow.  I have enjoyed the solid teaching and fellowship with other people who love Jesus at LBC since then.  I have been working as an oceanographic engineer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography since graduating in 2006.    I cherish the time I get to spend with my small group each week as we encourage one another and learn from each person’s walk with God.

  • Favorite Christian Book: Unity of the Bible – Daniel Fuller
  • Favorite Verse: 1 John 1:9
  • Hobbies: Sailing, loafing

Thomas & Karen Fong

Thomas:

I came to San Diego in 2005 to get my Master’s at UCSD.  I came to LBC because I knew that a friend came here for church.  Originally, I stayed out of habit, but eventually, I stayed because of the loving people and hearing teaching like I have never experienced anywhere else.

My time in Single Ministry was a great time of fellowship with other singles through activities or simply serving them through fixing their cars or other items.  I look forward to continuing to minister to the singles through more than just physical needs.

  • Hobbies: Spending time with Karen and my daughter, Penelope,
  • Fixing cars, fixing stuff up around the house.
  • Favorite Christian Book: A Gospel Primer – Milton Vincent
  • Favorite Bible verse:  Romans 8:18

Karen:

I first heard about Lighthouse when I transferred to UCSD for school in 2005.  One of my roommates was attending Lighthouse and invited me to join her my first Sunday in San Diego. I started attending regularly winter quarter because of the great teaching, accountability, and the love I saw people had for one another. I became a member soon after.  In 2009, I moved back home to San Jose for work but God brought me back in 2011 when Thomas and I got married and I’ve been at Lighthouse since.

I’m joining Single Staff because I want to be involved with the young adults at LBC in hopes to encourage and run this race for Christ together.

  • Hobbies: Spending time with people, especially with Thomas and our daughter Penelope, cake decorating, baking, and cooking
  • Favorite Christian Book: Humility by C.J. Mahaney, The Excellent Wife by Martha Peace, Spiritual Depression by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Allende, Vic

In December 2010, after completing graduate school, I received my permanent change of duty station (PCS) orders to San Diego from the U.S. Navy. Before I moved to San Diego in January 2011, God had graciously blessed me with solid, Bible-teaching churches and older men/elders to shepherd me. Because of God’s guidance and their shepherding, I was able to find LBC and, since then, it has been a tremendous blessing to be part of the LBC family. Shortly after becoming a member, I decided to serve in the Singles Life Administrative Staff. My heart is to serve my single brothers and sisters in the faith and to grow together with them in His knowledge and grace.

  • Hobbies: Surfing, running, soccer, outdoor activities, hunting (deer, turkey), reading, cooking, and fixing things.
  • Favorites Authors: John Piper, John MacArthur, D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, The Puritans, J.C. Ryle, Paul David Tripp, and other reformed authors.
  • Favorite Bible Verse: There are so many of them! God’s Word is so good for our souls!

Patrick & Christine Cho

Patrick: I came to LBC after hearing about Pastor John Kim from some of his family. I’m proud to say I’m a charter member of the church and have been here since the very beginning!  I serve as the Single Life Pastor.  It is a tremendous joy being on Single Life staff because I get to spend time with singles and watch God lead them and work in their lives as they make some of the most significant life decisions. Teaching, discipling, and counseling the singles at LBC has quickly grown to be a great passion in my life.

Christine: I first started attending Lighthouse as a freshman at UCSD. I eventually became a member my junior year, and I’ve been here ever since. I joined Singles staff because I never really had the chance to get to know people from this affinity group. I was always either a part of College Life or GraceLife ministries. I had the opportunity to serve as a small group leader, and it was a blessing to see fellow sisters strive for holiness in a working environment where it is often difficult to shine the light of Christ.
