I first came to LBC as an unbelieving college freshman, only interested in what I could gain from being a part of a church body. I didn’t come back after my first visit because a different church had free lunches, more hip music, and more collegians to hangout with. By God’s grace, I was saved and when I came back to LBC with the new lens of a believer, I fell in deep appreciation of LBC’s love and reverence for God, His Word, and His people.

As I learned more about God and His commandments, I sought out ways in which I could love the church and joined the Children’s ministry. I quickly realized that my endeavor to serve the families of LBC was actually a tremendous blessing to me. I am so thankful for the partnership I have with the parents and their investment in me as we pass on God’s greatness and glory to the next generation!

I started attending Lighthouse Bible Church during my sophomore year of college at UCSD in 2009. My friend had challenged me to commit to involvement in the body of Christ through a local church, and ever since then I have been growing alongside brothers and sisters who strive to glorify our God in everything we do. I joined Sonlight staff because I desired to be a part of the growth of the younger children at our church. It brings me joy to share God’s Word with the kids, knowing that He is sovereignly working in each of their hearts. I love getting to know the kids and being silly with them.

Kevin Kantharia

Hello! My name is Kevin Kantharia and I have the privilege of serving in Sonlight alongside my beautiful wife Tina. I have been attending Lighthhouse Bible Church since August 2010 when I first moved to San Diego. At Lighthouse, I found a group of believers who love God and who desire to live our their faith. As a result, I joined Lighthouse as a member because I wanted to grow in my faith alongside the church members and I wanted to serve the church. I joined the Sonlight ministry for two reasons. I wanted to serve the parents by partnering with them and teaching the bible to their children. And, I wanted to prepare myself for parenthood by learning to share God’s truth with children in a way that was helpful for them to understand. God willing, I hope to have children on day and I want to be ready to help my children to understand who God is and what He has done for us.

As a Korean immigrant growing up in New England, I was indoctrinated from an early age into the secular manifestations of the Puritan protestant work ethic and modernized cultural remnants of the rebellion against the Church of England and the British crown. Yet, it is San Diego, my spiritual birthplace, that defines my identity more than my strange blend of Korean-Yankee culture. While continuing my training after graduate school in the early 1990’s, it was in San Diego that I began to learn of God’s saving grace and acknowledged Christ as my Lord and Savior. More than a decade later, I returned to San Diego and began attending LBC in the fall of 2007. As the parent of a young child, I have come to take seriously the responsibility that God entrusted to me to pass on His greatness to the next generation through prayer, teaching and example. It is with great joy that I am able see the children in the church grow and to come alongside them to participate in the spiritual nurturing of their young hearts and minds. Having come to salvation at a much later stage of my adult life, I appreciate how critical a time early childhood can be to lay a good foundation of faith before worldly learning and attitudes begin to compete. I am honored and humbled to partner with other parents to instill in our children a love for God and a spiritual mindset that places the gospel at the center of how they think, behave, and interact with the world around them, becoming true disciples of Jesus.

I am a local San Diegan and I was already deeply involved in another church. However after several years of searching God led me to LBC in 2008. I am truly thankful for great teaching and genuine fellowship at LBC. I joined Sonlight shortly after becoming a member and it has been a blessing serving as staff. Working with young children most of time means we won’t see the fruits of our labor, but I am blessed to be partnered with parents and fellow servants who desire to point the children to our Lord and Savior. I thank God for the opportunities He has given us to to serve Him and to carry out the great commission with our children at LBC.

Ryan: I came to LBC as a headstrong, clueless college student and decided to stay because I saw that Lighthouse boldly proclaimed God’s truth (and still does) in a life-encompassing way that I had never encountered before. I joined the Sonlight staff to participate in that proclamation of God’s truth and love to the children of the church and also as a ministry in which to serve alongside my wonderful wife, Stephanie.

Stephanie:

I had visited Lighthouse every summer and Christmas break since I was in middle school because I had relatives here, and by God’s grace and sovereignty, my family and I moved to San Diego right before I started college in order to be a part of Lighthouse. I am so thankful for the biblical teaching and accountability found within this church family to help me grow in my relationship with God. On top of that, I met my faithful friend and husband, Ryan, here through serving on the Argentina missions team, and we have been married since April 2010. God gave us 2 precious gifts to shepherd: Charis (3 yrs) and AJ (4 months). I joined children’s ministry as soon as I became a member of Lighthouse from a desire to be a part of the children’s lives and come alongside parents in nurturing their spiritual growth.

Cesar Vigil-Ruiz

Hello! My name is Cesar Vigil-Ruiz, and I am delighted to be part of the Sonlight ministry! I am currently working at Syntron Bioresearch, Inc., as well as a private tutor. I am married to my lovely wife, Andrea, since August 2014! I am a graduate of UCSD (BA Philosophy), and have been a member of LBC since 2006! I joined Sonlight back in September 2013 to help teach the older kids about the God we find in Scripture, the God who made us and the God who can save sinners. It is a joy to be able to impart God’s truth to the minds and hearts of children who are part of this ministry, and I hope to continue to be of service to them as well as the parents, that by joining them, we can regularly point their kids to the Lord Jesus Christ, for the glory of God.

I started attending LBC during my freshman year at UCSD and became a member of the church the following school year. At the time, I was a young believer eager to learn about the Bible and consequently, I really appreciated Pastor John Kim’s expository approach to teaching Scripture. Through various circumstances and events, I became more convinced of the importance of passing God’s truth to future generations and I saw the Sonlight ministry as an excellent opportunity to carry out the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).
