LBC New Year’s Eve Service!

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC family and friends!

It’s hard to believe we are wrapping up another year together as a church family! The Lord has once again shown us tremendous grace and kindness to walk with us faithfully and help us grow together as a church. Come celebrate this Wednesday, December 31 as we ring in the New Year! We will be having a special New Year’s Eve service beginning at 6:00 PM. We’ll start with dinner, so please bring $5/person for food (children 0-12 eat free!). At 9:00 PM, we’ll have an East Coast countdown to 2015 so that you can take the kids home for bed if necessary. After that, you are welcome to hang out at the church building until midnight! Please bring snacks to share as well as board games (be sure to label your games!).

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

LBC Weekly SPARK – October 3, 2014

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC family and friends!

I hope this week has been good for you all as you remember who you are in Christ and what He has done for you. Whether your week has been good or challenging, it is always amazing to consider what undeserved grace we have received and continue to receive from the God of all grace. He not only has saved us from our sins, but continues to walk with us, causing us to grow up in Him. There is certainly great benefit for the one who places his faith in Jesus Christ. We have much more than we could have possibly hoped for because of our God who seeks us out and takes us in to be His own.

Praise God for the glorious grace we receive in Christ!

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Here are some of the upcoming opportunities to get involved at LBC San Diego!

  1. Midweek Bible Studies. Don’t forget that our midweek Bible studies are all back up and running. Check out the church calendar on the website as well as the various ministry webpages to find out more information about Kids’ Club, Lumos Youth Ministry, College Life, Single Life, and Grace Life Family Ministry.
  2. All Church Retreat. Our annual all-church retreat is coming up on October 24-26. The theme for this year is “The Cup and the Glory: Suffering and the Glory of God.” We are pleased to have Dr. Greg Harris of The Master’s Seminary as our speaker. The cost is $150/adult and $75/child (ages 3-12; $450 max/family). Space is limited so you’ll want to sign up soon. The last day to sign up for the retreat will be October 12.
  3. Flocks. Each month or so, we take a break from our regularly scheduled midweek Bible studies to break up into regional flock groups. We are currently taking flocks sign ups in the foyer on Sunday mornings. Find Cesar Vigil-Ruiz to sign up! If you are interested in opening up your home to host a flock this year, please contact Pastor Patrick.
  4. Membership Class. Our next two-part membership class will be on Saturday, October 18, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, and on Sunday, October 19, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. Attendance at both classes is required. If you’re interested in applying for membership, please contact Pastor Patrick for an application.
  5. LBCOC Inaugural Service. LBC Orange County will be having their official inaugural service on Sunday, October 12, at 4:30 pm. Since Pastor James Lee needs to have an approximate headcount of those planning to attend, we will be taking a rough count on Sunday morning during the announcements.
  6. Fall Festival. Fall Festival is our annual Halloween alternative event for our children. It has been one of the highlights of each year for our kids (and a lot of fun for grownups as well!). We need some help planning. If you are interested in helping, out please contact Josh Liu as soon as possible! There will be a planning meeting this Sunday, October 5, at 1:30 pm.
  7. Sunday School. Our adult Sunday school classes will begin this weekend! This time around, we will be offering two classes, which will both meet in the main sanctuary during second hour.

FOF (Instructors: Min Kim and Ryan Short). As usual, we will be offering Fundamentals of the Faith. This is a great class for anyone desiring to learn more about the basics of the Christian faith. It is also a required class for anyone pursuing membership at Lighthouse.

Answers to Common Questions (Instructor: Peter Lim). Elder Peter Lim has compiled a list of questions that are commonly asked by people at Lighthouse about various theological issues. This is a great introductory class to find out a little bit about why Lighthouse holds to some of the views that it does.

LBC Weekly SPARK – September 10, 2014

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC family and friends,

I know it has been a while since I last sent out one of these, but there are so many exciting things going on at the church that I want to communicate with you all! Please take some time to read through everything!

Before we get to the ministry opportunities, I wanted to share what a wonderful time our family had in San Jose this weekend with LBCSJ. If you don’t know, Lighthouse San Jose officially installed Dr. Mark Chin as their pastor this past Sunday. Mark and Julie and their two boys, Athan and Joshua, are an amazing family, and it was really great to witness the church’s warm reception of their new pastor at their installation service and annual banquet. If you don’t know the Chins, I’m sure we’ll have plenty of opportunities in the future to meet them and hopefully have Mark come down to preach for us here in San Diego. But for now, please pray as the family continues to get acclimated to their new city, new surroundings, and new church family. Personally, I’m really excited to have Mark as part of the pastoral team for the Lighthouse Alliance. Every opportunity we’ve had to get together has been an incredible blessing.

I’m sure it will take a little time for the church to get to know Mark and for everything to get into a good groove, so please pray for LBCSJ especially during these opening weeks and months as they get used to the changes. With Pastor Mark coming in, that also meant this past weekend was the last that Pastor John Kim was helping with pastoral duties at LBCSJ. We are so grateful for his sacrificial commitment to provide support for the leadership while also working to get LBCLA off the ground. Praise God for His sustaining care and grace. It was a bittersweet moment to see the church say goodbye to John while welcoming in their new pastor, Mark.

Well, be sure to “mark” this momentous occasion for LBC’s church history! Praise God for how He has worked in the lives of those in LBCSJ to bring them to this point.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC family and friends!

The summer has just begun and seems like it is flying by already! I hope you are all enjoying the longer days and opportunities to fellowship together. During the summer, most of our regularly scheduled activities and Bible studies will be put on hold to give our staffs a little break. More information about this will come (if it has not already) from the various ministry coordinators. Sunday School will also be taking a break for the summer. Please take the extra time to spend with each other! What a great time to build relationships, practice the “one anothers,” and deepen the love and unity of the church. I pray that in this regard it would be a fruitful summer.

Please also remember that with the summer comes the departure of a good number of our college seniors. Please be a blessing to them as they have blessed us during their time in San Diego. We’ve already heard from several collegians in the past few Sundays, and we will be hearing from more as the weeks go on. Please pray that the Lord would continue to cause them to grow in faith and help them through their transitions.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Here are some opportunities for ministry…

  1. Fun in the Sun Day. This Sunday will be kicking off our annual tradition of FITS! On the last Sunday of the month, we will be heading out to one of our local parks for some food and fellowship. This Sunday, we will be joined at Torrey Hills Neighborhood Park by Redeemer’s Grace Church! Be sure to bring your sports gear and sunscreen! Bring $5 for food (kids 0-12 eat free!). FITS will run from about 11:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
  2. Czech Republic Summer Mission. Please pray for our Czech Republic team as they depart on Tuesday, July 1 to minister overseas. The Lord has once again provided a tremendous opportunity to reach unbelievers for Christ and to come alongside and support a new church plant in the city of Beroun. Please pray that He would be gracious to allow the trip to be greatly successful. Also, there is still time to support the team financially if you would like. Support letters are available in the foyer at the church building with more information.
  3. Grace Life Equipping Seminar. The Grace Life equipping seminar originally scheduled for Saturday, July 5 has been cancelled. It will be rescheduled sometime in the upcoming year.
  4. Summer Bible Study. Beginning Wednesday, July 2, we will have a special summer Bible study for our collegians and singles led by Roger Alcaraz. Bible study will begin each Wednesday at 7:00 PM at the church. Come out for a great time of equipping and midweek fellowship.

LBC Weekly SPARK – March 19, 2014

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC family and friends,

Consider the following excerpt from Jerry Bridges’ Respectable Sins. I found this analogy to be extremely helpful in conveying the deadly nature of sin:

“Cancer! It’s a dreaded word, a word that often invokes a sense of despair and sometimes even hopelessness. . . . Another term for cancer is malignancy. Medically, the word malignant describes a tumor of potentially unlimited growth that expands locally into adjoining tissue by invasion and systemically by metastasizing into other areas of the body. Left alone, a malignancy tends to infiltrate and metastasize throughout the entire body and will eventually cause death. . . . Sin is a spiritual and moral malignancy. Left unchecked, it can spread throughout our entire inner being and contaminate every area of our lives. Even worse, it often will metastasize from us into the lives of other believers around us. None of us lives on a spiritual or social island. Our attitudes, words, and actions, and oftentimes even our private unspoken thoughts, tend to have an effect on those around us.”

With this analogy in mind, it’s no wonder the Lord Jesus called His disciples to deal with sin in a radical way (Matt. 5:29-30). Even unrepentant sin in the church, like a cancer, must be removed because of the deadly influence it can have (Matt. 18:15-20; 1 Cor. 5:1-13; Titus 3:10-11).

As believers in Christ, it is not that we should walk around defeated because of our constant failures. Actually, we should rejoice in the grace of God that He forgives sinners (cf. 1 John 1:9). The problem is that all too often the opposite is true of our attitude towards sin. Instead of treating sin with seriousness, we have a flippant and casual attitude towards it. We justify our ungodly behavior with excuses and we cover up our sins.

We need to remember how dangerous personal sin is. We have been called to walk in holiness as God is holy. We are called to be set apart from this world, denying the flesh and its desires. We certainly aren’t going to do this perfectly (Praise God for His patience and grace!), but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t constantly strive for it. Instead of making excuses for our sin, let’s remember the amazing grace of God and our love for our Savior by fighting for personal holiness and excising sin from our lives with surgical diligence and precision.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Dear LBC family and friends!

I hope this week has been a source of joy for you in the Lord and that you are seeking to honor Him in the everyday things of life. Last week, a number of our men had a chance to attend the Shepherds’ Conference with Dr. John MacArthur at Grace Community Church. It was a tremendous time of instruction, fellowship, and encouragement. If you have a chance, I would encourage you to check out the website for the conference. It includes a very helpful archive of audio from general session sermons and break out seminars from all the past conferences. Though you might not have been able to attend, you can still benefit from the instruction. As the seminars in particular cover a wide range of topics, you’re sure to find something helpful for your encouragement and growth. Check out www.shepherdsconference.org.

(Editor’s Note: Presently it looks like only the General Sessions for 2014 have been posted; the Seminars are sure to follow soon however).

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

LBC Missions Fellowship Night

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC family and friends,

Greetings from the Shepherds’ Conference at Grace Community Church! I wanted to send out a quick email to let you all know about a couple opportunities to learn more about our ministry partnership in Argentina. Matias Buldain is currently in Southern California for the Shepherds’ Conference. Matias and his father Eduardo lead the church planting ministry that planted the church in Tucuman with Pastor Jorge Ahualle.

On Sunday, March 9, Matias will be preaching at LBC Los Angeles. If you would like to attend their service, the church meets at Vision Christian Fellowship in Pasadena (1555 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91106). The service begins at 4:30 PM.

On Monday, March 10, we will be having a special fellowship night to give Matias a chance to get to know some of the people from LBC San Diego. This will happen at the LBC San Diego church building at 6:00 PM. At the fellowship night, Matias will be giving a brief presentation about his ministry in Argentina. If you would like to attend, PLEASE EMAIL ME TO LET ME KNOW YOU ARE COMING. We are asking $10/adult to cover the cost of food, but please only pay what you are able. We want you to be there!

If you are free throughout the rest of the day on Monday, I will be showing Matias around San Diego. If you would like to join us, please email me and we can try to coordinate schedules.

I hope many of you will be able to come out to these events. Matias is a dear friend and diligent worker for the gospel. We are so thankful for his ministry in Argentina and are thrilled that he could be here with us.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Dear LBC family and friends!

I hope you’re all enjoying a wonderful Wednesday and that your week is off to a great start! The college students are coming off of a memorable weekend at Pine Valley Bible Conference Center. Their speaker was Pastor Jonathan Rourke of Community Bible Church in Vista, and he spoke on the will of God. The messages should be online sometime soon if you would like to listen to them.

Our annual retreats are always a highlight of the year. They provide wonderful opportunities for fellowship and building relationships. It is also a great time to learn from God’s Word together. We’ve always said that there really is nothing that compares to having a weekend together at retreat. We hope that the collegians really benefited greatly from that time. Don’t forget that the single adults will be having their retreat next month!

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

LBC Weekly SPARK – January 30, 2014

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC church family and friends!

I hope your week is going well and you are continuing to walk in the Lord. This past Sunday we had a chance to introduce our theme for 2014, “One Thing I Do,” from Philippians 3:13-14. While there is much that we can glean from that passage and its context, it was refreshing to see Paul simplify the Christian faith to one idea – the pursuit of Christ.

This not only serves as a helpful reminder to focus our Christian activity that we might know Christ more, but it also can be seen as a litmus test to evaluate how profitable our speech, actions, ministry, and motives are. When you seek to read through your Bible, serve on a ministry staff, meet with someone for accountability and prayer, etc., you can look back on those times and consider, “Did that help draw me closer to my Savior and Lord?”

This is especially important considering how easily our sinful tendencies can turn these spiritual activities into self-promoting industries. Rather than giving the glory to God, we are prone to directing attention to ourselves even in very subtle ways. Philippians 3 reminds us that our lives are to be lived in a relentless pursuit of Christ. This is the one thing we are committed to and it is the one thing we do. May 2014 be a year where we all strive to know Him more in His death and resurrection.

One Thing I Do,

Pastor Patrick

Here are some upcoming ministry opportunities:

  1. FLOCKS! Don’t forget that this week is flocks week, which means that our regularly scheduled midweek activities will be on hold until next week. For more information about flocks, please visit the church website.
  2. Super Bowl Party. If you don’t have any other place to watch the big game, we will be projecting the game in the sanctuary after church on Sunday. Whether you are cheering on the Broncos or the Seahawks, or you just want to hangout for the afternoon, come out around 3:00 PM and bring a snack or appetizer to share (feeding 8-10 people). Drinks will be provided. Please note that we will not be projecting the half time show.
  3. Women’s Ministry Car Rally. Please remember that this Sunday is the last day for you ladies to signup for the women’s ministry car rally event for February 8. The car rally will begin at the church building at 9:00 AM. Be sure to bring some money for food. You can sign up with Christine Cho (christinescho@gmail.com).
  4. LBC Los Angeles. LBCLA will be having their official inaugural weekend on Saturday, February 15 and Sunday, February 16.
