LBC Weekly SPARK – January 23, 2014

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC family and friends,

I hope you are doing well and walking in the Lord. If you are following along in the reading plan for 2014, today’s reading is from Exodus 16-18. One of the highlights of this passage is God’s provision of manna and water in the Wilderness of Sin. When I had the opportunity to visit Israel, one of the places we went to was the Wilderness of Sin. It was a vast desert land with oppressive heat. We wandered out there for about forty minutes. The Israelites wandered for forty years! It is no wonder that in chapters 16-17 we find the Israelites grumbling to Moses. Sadly, their complaint called into question the goodness of God arguing that they had it better when they were Egypt (Exod. 16:3). They longed for the bread and meat they enjoyed in Egypt (conveniently forgetting that it was also a time of tyrannical slavery!).

As a demonstration of God’s tremendous grace, even in the context of Israel’s complaining, He provided not only bread and water, but meat also! He completely supernaturally met their need when they could not find any deliverance in their natural circumstances. He showed Himself to be a God of glory by caring for His people. God provided for them faithfully for forty years until they arrived at Canaan (Exod. 16:35).

How disappointing that by Numbers 11, as the people left Sinai, they grumbled yet again against the Lord’s provision. What a picture of our sinful human hearts that we can so quickly become dissatisfied by what we receive by grace. Passages like Exodus 16-18 not only highlight our sinful nature but also God’s tremendous goodness and grace. In light of this passage, consider how you might confess to the Lord about any sinful complaining you have done recently. Ask the Lord’s forgiveness and trust in His promise to forgive. Also, think about how you can be thankful for the Lord’s gracious provision. How has He provided for you in ways you might not have foreseen?

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

LBC Weekly SPARK – January 2, 2014

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC family and friends,

Happy New Year! I hope your 2014 is off to a wonderful start! The New Year always provides a helpful time for self-evaluation and new resolutions and adjustments. As we looked at during our New Year’s Eve service, one of the passages that is often turned to during this season is 1 Corinthians 10:31. This is appropriate because our goals should stem from the one most worthy motive – to bring God glory.

Too often resolutions are merely about self-improvement. We want to be better individuals so we seek to lose some weight, learn new things, and treat others better. While these resolutions might seem lofty in one sense, in another they fall awfully short of what they could be. We forget that we were created to be part of something greater than ourselves. We worship an amazingly awesome God and our lives could be spent in pursuit of magnifying Him and ascribing to Him the worth He deserves. Instead, we shrink our vision down and focus on our comparatively puny selves. As I said at the New Year’s Eve service, self-improvement simply for the sake of self-improvement is like decorating a rotting tree or gilding a tomb. It serves such little purpose when compared to the grand scope of God’s will for our lives.

Let’s allow the New Year to serve as a much needed reminder that our goals and resolutions must be run through the filter of God’s Word to ensure that we are expending our resources and energy on things that truly matter.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

LBC Weekly SPARK – November 21, 2013

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC family and friends,

I hope you are doing well and walking in the Lord. Hopefully with the holiday season upon us, things aren’t just frantic at your home. I know that we can oftentimes get caught up with planning, get-togethers, presents, and traveling, but I hope you will take some time each day to remember the blessings you have received.

This weekend, our church will celebrate Thanksgiving together with our annual potluck. Of course, many are excited about the food (and they should be!), but I am thankful that most are glad for another opportunity to spend an evening together with brothers and sisters in Christ. The church really has gotten to the size that many of us have really nothing much in common other than the fact that we share in the same gospel hope by God’s grace. And yet, for us that’s enough.

This holiday season, I am particularly thankful for the fellowship of the church. It is so refreshing to see each week how the love of Christ binds us together and how the Spirit of God has woven us in our relationships. I would encourage you to tell someone at the church this week why you are thankful for them. Try to be specific. Be a blessing to someone because you never know. Perhaps you will have encouraged someone who really needed an uplifting word.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Here are this week’s ministry opportunities:

  1. FLOCKS. Please don’t forget that it’s flocks week! Our regularly scheduled midweek Bible studies will be taking a break, and the church family will be meeting in regional flocks throughout the community. Most flocks meet on Friday evening, but there are a few that meet on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Please visit the church website for more details.
  2. THANKSGIVING POTLUCK. This Sunday evening, we will have our annual Thanksgiving potluck! This is more than a meal shared. It is a great opportunity to fellowship with the church family and be a blessing to one another. Please come prepared to share your thanks as we will be having a time of sharing. It all begins at 5:00 PM on Sunday. Please contact Lynn Yu if you have any questions about helping with food.
  3. THANKSGIVING BREAK. Since next week is Thanksgiving, we will be taking a break from all our regular midweek activities. This includes Kids’ Club, Lumos Youth, College Life, Single Life, Grace Life, and Mommy and Me.
  4. MEN’S MINISTRY SPORTS FELLOWSHIP. On Saturday, December 7, the men of the church will come together for a morning of athletic fun! We will meet at Torrey Hills Neighborhood Park from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Afterwards, we’ll hang out at Chick-Fil-A on Mira Mesa for lunch!
  5. CHRISTMAS CONCERT. On Saturday, December 14, we will be having our annual Christmas Concert. Come out for this musical celebration as we take time to celebrate Jesus’ birth. It all begins at 6:00 PM at the church. Be sure to invite your friends and family!
  6. CHRISTMAS SERVICE. On Sunday, December 22, we will be having a special Christmas service. This is a great opportunity to invite unbelieving friends and family to come out and hear the gospel message. That weekend, the children’s ministries will also be taking a break and the kids will join us in service. Nursery care will still be provided.
  7. NEW YEAR’S EVE SERVICE. On Tuesday, December 31, we will be having a New Year’s Eve service at the church beginning at 5:30 PM. Dinner will be served. Please bring $5/adult for food (children 0-12 eat free!). This will be a special time to reflect on the past year, but also to look forward to 2014!

LBC Weekly SPARK – September 11, 2013

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC family and friends,

As you know, today marks the twelfth anniversary of the atrocious terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D. C., and Pennsylvania. Images are flooding the news and social media taking us back to the day when the World Trade Center went down and the Pentagon was attacked. We are reminded of the heroes of Flight 93 who saved the nation’s Capitol when their plane went down in a Pennsylvania field. This a sobering time of reflection across America as flags fly at half mast and ceremonies and vigils are held in the nation’s capital. We remember those whose lives were lost as victims and heroes, and grieve with their families and loved ones. It would be good to take some time to pray today for our nation.

In the opening verses of 1 Timothy 2, the Lord commands the church to pray for all men, but especially for our governing authorities. This is because God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Whatever our political biases, as Christians we are called to pray for the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government. We ought to pray that the Lord would give our governing leaders wisdom to lead this country and the resolve to stand up for what is right. But more than anything, we need to pray that the gospel would get a foothold on our society and that souls would be won for the Lord Jesus Christ, because it is only in Christ that this nation has true hope.

Sometimes the Lord uses tragedies to bring us back to our knees in prayer and dependence. He uses our hurt to remind us of our frailty and the fleetingness of life. In the infinite wisdom of God, He can take our greatest trials and turn them for our benefit according to His sovereign purposes. As we remember 9/11, let’s also remember our God who was there in New York, Washington D. C., and Pennsylvania. Let’s pray that the country would not just see this day as a reason to find strength in itself, but to look to the Lord to be its strength.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

LBC Weekly SPARK – August 28, 2013

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC family and friends!

I hope you are having a great week so far! This Sunday we’ll be taking a look at the most famous passage in the entire Bible! Take some time this week to read through and meditate upon Psalm 23. It is a wonderful Psalm about the loving care of God. What does it mean that the Lord is Shepherd? Why is David comforted even in times of deep distress? It should be a good study with much to learn about our awesome God.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Here are the announcements for this week:

  1. Singles/Youth Bible Study. The singles and youth ministries will be meeting again tonight at 6:30 PM at the church building. Dinner will be served until 7:15 PM. Please bring some cash to throw in the jar.

  • Please pray for Jeff and Shelby as they get married this weekend!

  • Please pray for our expecting parents.
  • Please pray for our seminarians as school has begun and they are once again commuting to and from The Master’s Seminary each week.
  • Please pray for LBC San Jose as they continue to think through the process of finding a new pastor.
  • Please pray for all the LBC church plants that the Lord would guide them and provide for them. Praise God for the work we are able to participate in to preach the gospel!
  • Please pray for the leaders of the church that God would protect, sustain, and grow them by His grace.
  • Pray that we would be a church that continues faithfully to proclaim God’s truth in love and that we would grow together in the unity of the faith.

LBC Weekly SPARK – August 24, 2013

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC friends and family!

It’s already been a busy week with our members meeting on Sunday, final combined Wednesday night Bible study, final Friday night College Life Hangout, but there are still some great upcoming opportunities to spend time with the church family and be a blessing. Let’s remember that our goal should be to build each other up in the Lord. Sometimes it’s easy to be self-oriented when it comes to the decisions we make. When we come together as a church, we need to think about how we can best love, serve, encourage, and edify those in the body of Christ. Let’s never grow weary of investing in one another and stirring each other to love and good deeds!

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

LBC Weekly SPARK – August 14, 2013

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC family and friends!

I hope you are doing well and walking in the Lord. I read a passage from ch. 8 of R. C. Sproul’s The Holiness of God this morning that I thought was particularly helpful:

“Luther used a wonderful Latin phrase to describe the status of the justified sinner: simul justus et peccator. Let’s look at the phrase a word at a time to discern its meaning for us. Simul is the Latin word from which our English word simultaneous is derived; it means ‘at one and the same time.’ Justus is the Latin from which our word just comes, and et is the Latin word for ‘and.’ The word peccator is probably least familiar to us. We derive the English words impeccable and peccadillo from it. It is the Latin word for ‘sinner.’ Putting the words together, we get simul Justus et peccator: ‘at the same time just and sinner.’ That is what saints are, people who are at one and the same time just, yet sinful.

“That saints are still sinners is obvious. How then can they be just? Saints are just because they have been justified. In and of themselves they are not just. They are made just in God’s sight by the righteousness of Christ. This is what justification by faith is about. When we put our personal trust for our salvation in Christ and in Him alone, then God transfers to our account all of the righteousness of Jesus. His justness becomes ours when we believe in Him. It is a legal transaction. The transfer of righteousness is like an accounting transaction where no real property is exchanged. That is, God puts Jesus’ righteousness in my account while I am still a sinner.”

May we always be thankful that God could be both just and justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus!

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Here are the announcements for this week!

  3. Men’s Breakfast. We have men’s breakfast on Saturday, August 24, at 7:30 AM. All men are welcome to attend as we address the topic of being a leader in the home. Please bring a breakfast item to share!
  4. FITS. Our next Fun in the Sun Day will be on Sunday, August 25, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Torrey Hills Neighborhood Park. Come on out for a great time together with the church family in the San Diego sun! Please bring $5 for food (children 0-12 eat free!).
  5. Be sure to claim your lost items by this weekend or they will be donated or discarded.
