Christmas Concert Review 2010

by Jennifer Vo

Want an early dose of Christmas cheer? Come celebrate the coming of the season with Lighthouse at our annual Christmas concert! Unfortunately, this year’s concert is now but a memory (albeit one that is recorded on video and able to be experienced vicariously, if you ask the right people), but mark your calendar for next year to make sure you don’t miss the party and, more importantly, the much-needed reminder of the real reason for the season: the birth of Jesus Christ.

As nine-time LBC Christmas concert performer Christine Cho remarks, “I really think LBC does an excellent job of putting on a great concert that’s both well-organized and Christ-centered.” From the choir’s opening lines to Pastor Patrick’s devotional, the story of Christ’s birth and the significance of the Gospel are front and center in the words being sung and spoken. Although the musical offerings range in genre from traditional hymns to contemporary melodies and in style from acoustic ballads to upbeat ditties, the same diligence is applied to all song selections in weighing the lyrical content of each song. As Christine puts it, “one of the challenges is choosing the right song.” With songs about Christmas trees and Santa Claus beginning to outnumber proclamations of Christ’s birth (at least on radio airwaves), it is refreshing to see how LBC’s Music Ministry never loses sight of what—and who—is most important. Christine reflects that “I try to stay away from anything too secular, remembering that the concert is being used as an evangelistic event [for] the message of Christ.”

In addition, attendees can be assured that LBC music director Eugene Park has done his best behind the scenes to strive for quality in the concert performances. “One of my jobs as the music director is to protect the church from bad music and bad singers,” says Eugene. “Therefore I have ‘tryouts’ for those who want to sing a solo of some sort for the concert. And yes, I have asked people not to sing because they weren’t good enough. Having the right heart is a requirement, but having at least some talent is also a requirement as well, especially for something like the Christmas concert.”

On the note of worship, Christine Cho offers a glimpse into the careful heart preparation undertaken by all performers before showtime: “During the concert, it’s easy to get caught up with when you’re supposed to go on stage, remembering what your lines are, and trying to sound your best. While it’s important to strive for excellence in these areas, it’s even more important to remain worshipful through it all.” Christine shares how she stays fixed on Christ: “I pray throughout the concert to make sure my heart is in the right place, and I also reflect on the lyrics of my songs so that I can convey the message of the songs appropriately when I perform them.”

Lastly, with all the performance, production, and heart issues in order, only one piece remains: the audience. (Read: Come, and invite all your friends, family, and co-workers!) At Lighthouse Bible Church, Christmas concert is not an event we host only for ourselves but as an opportunity to reach out to the local community, to loved ones and strangers alike. In addressing the purpose of Christmas concert, Eugene emphasizes the potential for the concert to “possibly open up conversations” with unbelievers. Eugene tells us, “We don’t depend on guests to fill the seats. However, we still stress the importance of inviting people who normally don’t come to church because a lot of them will tend to come to something like a concert, and they’ll get a chance to hear the gospel [as a result].”

Thus, at the end of the night, when all the music has ended and words linger only in silent air, the Gospel is still the most significant aspect of it all. Christine Cho summarizes it best when she reminds us that even after all the hours of hard work poured into the quality of the production, “My hope for those attending is that they would look past the quality of the performances and hear the message of Christ instead.”

Words to live by, indeed. Merry Christmas, everyone!

LBC Weekly SPARK – December 15, 2010

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Hello friends and family at LBC!

I hope you are doing well and walking in the Lord. ‘Tis the season to be shopping for Christmas gifts, planning holiday parties, and vacationing with family. Our family enjoyed walking up and down our street last week to look at the Christmas lights on all the houses. One family invited us in and showed us their ten foot Christmas tree and holiday decorations. It was really pretty!

With all the fun of the holiday season, let’s also take some time to remember Jesus. Ironically, when he was born, there were no lights strung on houses. There were no ornately decorated trees. It was a humble birth in a stable and Christ was laid in a manger. How amazing to think in that humble scene that there laid the Savior of the world! Christmas should always remind us of the amazing grace of God. He sent His only Son to save sinners. This truth is the basis for real Christmas cheer. In comparison, all the festivities of the world, as bright and shining as they are, really are empty and meaningless.

Let Jesus be at the heart of all your celebrating this season!

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Here are the announcements for this week:

  1. Christmas Service. Our annual Christmas service will be this Sunday, December 19 during our regular worship service time. Hello LBC family and friends!

I hope you are all enjoying a wonderful week and that you are walking in the Lord. With the holiday season comes a busy time for the church. Please read below about some of the things you’ll want to take part in and attend. Please take advantage of the opportunities God gives us to represent Him with those who do not know Him. Like we’ve said before, it is particularly during this time of year that those who are typically closed off to the gospel will be willing to at least talk to you about Christ. Let’s not let these opportunities go wasted.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Here are the announcements for this week:

  1. Flocks. We will not be meeting with our regularly scheduled affinity group Bible studies this week (i.e., Kids’ Club, Lumos Youth Group, College Life, Single Life) because of flocks. More information about flocks can be found at the church website. Come out to a flock and enjoy some refreshing fellowship! Be sure to download and complete the homework sheet so you can take part in the group discussion.
  2. Communion. Don’t forget that we’ll be taking communion together this Sunday as a church family. Please come having prepared your hearts to remember Christ and the cross.
  3. New Visitors Meet N Greet. This Sunday, immediately following the regular service, we will be having a Meet N Greet in Room 101. If you have come to Lighthouse within the past couple months, please join us for that time of fellowship. Pizza and drinks will be provided.
  4. Christmas Concert. Our Christmas Concert will be on Saturday, December 11 at 6:00pm. No tickets are required for entrance, but flyers are available if you would like to invite your family and friends. This is a great chance for them to hear the message of salvation, so be sure to invite them! As this is an annual highlight for the church, so you won’t want to miss it!
  5. Angel Tree. We will be participating in Angel Tree once again this year, which is a ministry to children of incarcerated parents. If you would like more information about how you can get involved, please talk to Joyce Kang.
  6. Softball at the Park. Want to get to know some of the people at church better? On Sunday, December 12, at 1:00pm, we will be heading to the park to play some softball and enjoy lunch together. If you are interested in participating, please contact Abram Kim. Don’t forget your cleats and mitts!
  7. Christmas Service. We will be having a special Christmas service on Sunday, December 19. This will be a chance for us to be reminded of why Christ came. We will not dismiss the children that Sunday for their Sunday School classes. Instead, we will have all the families worship together in our service. Nursery care will still be available.
  8. New Year’s Eve Fellowship. We will be having a New Year’s Eve Fellowship on Friday, December 31 at 6:00pm at the church. In order to allow parents to put their kids to bed early, we will have a countdown at midnight Eastern time (9:00pm here!). We’ll continue to fellowship and play after that until midnight Pacific time, when we’ll countdown again! =) While we celebrate the coming of a New Year, this will also give us an opportunity to reflect on this past year and worship together.

Dear LBC Family and Friends,

I hope you are doing well and walking in the Lord. What a blessing this past weekend was with our All-Church Retreat. I’ve been hearing from many of you that you were challenged and encouraged by the messages by Jonathan Leeman. I’m so glad to hear that! Let’s be careful not to let that be merely a nice retreat experience. Now that
we are getting back into our regular weekly services, it will be important to reflect on what we learned at retreat in order to put the principles into practice.

For those of you who weren’t able to go to the retreat, the messages and Q&A time from the retreat can all be downloaded from the church website. I would encourage you to listen to them. I also would recommend all to pick up a copy of Jonathan’s book, The Church and the Surprising Offense of God’s Love, if you haven’t already done so. It is a tremendously helpful book, and perhaps the best book on church membership that I have read.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Here are the announcements for this week:

  1. Friday Night Bible Studies. Don’t forget that our Friday night Bible studies are back this week for our Youth, College, and Singles Ministries. The youth and singles will meet at the church at 7:00pm. The collegians will also meet at 7:00pm, but on-campus at SDSU and UCSD. Information about College Life rides can be found at our website.
  2. Membership Class. We will be having our next membership class this weekend, November 13-14, at the church. The two-part class will be on Saturday from 9:00am-12:00pm, and Sunday from 1:00-4:00pm. Both sessions are required for membership. If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact Pastor Patrick for an application.
  3. Communion. Since we were at retreat this past weekend, we will be having our communion service this Sunday during our regular service. Please come having prepared your hearts to worship our Lord.
  4. Thanksgiving Potluck/Vision Quest. On Sunday, November 21, at 5:30pm, we will be having our next Vision Quest event. This will be our annual Thanksgiving Potluck dinner. Signups for the potluck will be taken this Sunday by Suzie Park. Please sign up to help ensure that all the food will get prepared. Also, as it is Thanksgiving, take some time to reflect on what you are thankful for and be prepared to share with one another. Come out to our Vision Quest event for some great food and fellowship, and to learn more about the Mission of LBC.
  5. Operation Christmas Child. Each year we participate with Samaritan’s Purse to encourage children all around the world and help spread the gospel message. Fill a shoebox with various toys, socks, toiletries, etc. and bring it to church on Sunday! More information about what can and cannot be included in the packages can be found at their website (www.samaritanspurse.org). This Sunday before service will be our only collection date for OCC, so be sure to put a package together and drop it off! Contact Mrs. Grace S. Lee if you have any questions (gracelee357@aol.com).
  6. Christmas Concert and Service. Our Christmas Concert will be on Saturday, December 11 at 6:00pm. Please invite your family and friends to join us for some good music, drama, and food. It will be a great opportunity for them to hear the message of the gospel. Our special Christmas Service will be on Sunday, December 19. This also will be a great time to reflect on the gift of Christ.
  7. Mission Bowl. If you are interested in playing on this year’s Mission Bowl flag football teams, please contact Abram Kim if you are a guy, and Randy Tsuchiyama if you are a gal. No experience is necessary! Just come with a humble, teachable heart. This is a great chance to get to know your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ better and to get some exercise as well!

Please continue to pray for Pastor John and Angela, and the church planting team!

LBC Weekly SPARK – October 28, 2010

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Hello dear LBC family and friends,

I hope you are doing well and walking in the Lord. It’s been several weeks since I last sent an email out, so I apologize for that. As the holiday season approaches, we are entering a time of the year when many friends and family who do not typically go to church might be open to the idea. It really is a wonderful chance to invite them to come and hear God’s Word preached. Even still, this is a mindset that we should keep all year. Instead of waiting for special events and activities, we should always look for opportunities to share the gospel with others and help them come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior. Every week, there are multiple opportunities to at least invite friends to events at church. Not only do we have our regular Sunday service, but we also have our Friday night Bible studies, monthly flocks, etc. Take some time to consider Paul’s words from 1 Corinthians 9:23, “I do all things for the sake of the gospel….” Let’s really seek to live up to our name and serve as a bright shining beacon here in San Diego to our family, friends, coworkers, and roommates.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Here are the announcements for this week:

  1. Flocks. Don’t forget that this is flocks week, so our regularly scheduled mid-week activities will be put on hold. Flocks information can be found at our church website http://lighthousebc.com/welcome/flocks/. You can also download the flocks worksheet from the website.
  2. Fall Festival. This Sunday is our annual Fall Festival! It will be at the church from 5:00-10:00pm. We will be offering a variety of food, games, and activities, so come out and invite your friends! Adults are $5 and kids are free! Be sure to bring a decorated pumpkin for our pumpkin carving competition (carve it and then bring it). We will also have a mini-pumpkin competition for the kids (draw on it and then bring it). Costumes are encouraged, but please keep them appropriate and non-scary. See you all there!
  3. All-Church Retreat. This Sunday is the last day to sign up for the All-Church Retreat!!! Be sure to see Ryan Short and Jonathan Yang in the foyer to reserve your spot. The retreat will be on November 5-7 at Pine Valley Bible Camp. Our speaker is Jonathan Leeman, who will be addressing the theme of “True Love.” The cost is $150/adult, $140/ for college and youth, and $75/child. Different financial aid options are available, so please do not let money be the reason you do not go. If you have paid the deposit to reserve your spot, please pay your remaining balance this Sunday with the registrars.
  4. Membership Class. We will be having our next two-part membership class on Saturday, November 13, from 9:00am-12:00pm, and Sunday, November 14, from 1:00-4:00pm. Both classes are necessary for attendance. If you are interested in becoming a member, please see Pastor Patrick for an application.
  5. Thanksgiving Potluck/Vision Quest. This year’s Thanksgiving Potluck will serve as a Vision Quest event for the church. The dinner will be on Sunday, November 21, at 5:30pm, at the church. We’ll have a chance to reflect on the year and to learn more about the Mission of LBC. More details to come!
  6. Christmas Concert. The Christmas Concert will be on Saturday, December 11, at 6:00pm, at the church. This is a great opportunity to invite your family and friends to come listen to good music and hear the message of the gospel. If you are interested in performing in this year’s concert, please contact Eugene Park.
  7. Engagement. Congratulations to Garrett Glende and Wury Kim on their engagement! I know they are up in San Jose now, but we’re still thinking of them and want to support them in their engagement.

Hansol and Angella An – Marcus Nolan (8/12)
Randy and Elaine Sarmiento – Charlotte Rose (8/27)

Brian and Beverly Chan – Solomon Brian (9/16)
Eugene and Sallie Yang – Matthew Ryan (10/10)
J. R. and Kathy Cuevas – Jayden Christopher (10/14; San Jose)

Weekly Links – Special LBC Edition

by Kyle Grindley

It’s been more than two years since the last re-design of the web site. In that time a lot has happened: we added a member directory, we’ve added affinity group web sites, the photo ministry went online, the online Beacon was launched, the video ministry went online and we planted a church. With all these changes have we outgrown our old design, so we have launched a new one.

The first thing you will notice when you look at the front page is rotating images. This is where the most important announcements of the church are highlighted. It will also alert you when new sermons, videos, and photos have been added.

Since the first thing most people see of our church is the web site, we have tried to make it easier for visitors to find information about our church. We have added an “I’m New Here” link that will take visitors directly to the welcome page with a brief overview of our doctrine, philosophy of ministry and what visitors can expect when they visit on Sunday and links to pages with more detail. For those who would like to make LBC their home but are not sure what the next step is they can check out the “Get Involved” page that explains the different ways you can get plugged into LBC.

For those who have been coming to LBC, the primary interaction with the web site is the Beacon, sermons, the calendar, and the member directory. You will notice that each of these are easily accessible from the top any page on the site. We are also posting the weekly bulletin, so if you missed any of the announcements you can check them there.

Along with the revamped website, we have also redesigned the Media section. Under the banner of the Media page you can now listen to past sermons, catch up on missed videos or relive the activities again through our photo gallery. Like like previous Sermon page, the latest sermon will always be displayed first. However, the newest feature we have added is the ability to search. To begin a search, simply click on the “Show filter” link right below the Sermons tab of the banner and an array of filters will be displayed to help you narrow down your search. You can now search by Preacher, Book of the Bible, Series, what type of service and date.

For example you are doing a personal study on the book of John. Start by clicking on “Show filter” then under Book, select “John”. Now all the sermons with the main passage on the book of John will be shown. If you want to continue and narrow down your search on the book of John but also only the Sunday messages, click “Show filter” again and under Service, select “Sunday Morning” Now you can see your search results are even smaller than previously because it is only showing Sunday morning messages on John. If at anytime you decide you want to delete a filter but do not want to start over, under the “Show filter” link it shows an “Active filter” displaying all the filters you currently have. Clicking on the “x” next to the filter and you will see your search results increase due to a broader search.

Now that you have found the sermon you are looking for, clicking on the title will take you to the individual sermon page. On this page you can listen or download the sermon, follow along the main passage in ESV translation or navigate to sermons that were either preached directly before/after or the same day. We hope that with the addition of these search filters, you will be able to track down any sermon!

We hope that you enjoy the new website.  If you notice anything missing, or you’d like to join the Web Team, please speak to me.

LBC Weekly SPARK – September 17, 2010

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear Lighthouse Family,

I hope you are doing well and walking in the Lord. As the fall rolls in, things are getting a little busier at LBC! It’s an exciting time of the year with some of our most highlighted church events. Read through the announcements below to get a better idea of what’s to come.

As we think about the busy quarter, it’s also a good time to reflect on how we have been serving as witnesses of the gospel of Christ. Remember that whatever we do as a church family is an opportunity to invite unbelieving friends and family. Have them come get to know our church family and to hear the Word of God preached. Really, every Sunday service is an evangelistic opportunity. Let’s make the most of the opportunities we have to represent Christ in this community. People are dying in their sins and life is short (Ps. 90). In the way we walk and talk before those who do not know Christ, let’s show them how awesome it is to know the God of creation.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Here are the announcements for this week:

  • Congratulations to Brian and Beverly Chan on the birth of Solomon Brian Chan yesterday (9/16) at 10:49 AM. He was 7 lbs. 6 oz. and 21 inches long. Mom and baby are doing fine. Please pray for them as they recover from delivery and welcome home their new baby!
  • Friday Night Bible Studies. Don’t forget that the Friday night Bible studies meet tonight. The SDSU Campus Fellowship meets at the home of Byron Dang at 7:00 PM (UCSD students are invited!). Single Life Friday Night Light will meet at the church in the sanctuary at 7:00 PM. Lumos Youth Bible Study meets at the church in Room 107 at 7:00 PM.
  • FITS. The location for FITS this Sunday has been changed! We are no longer going to be going to Mission Bay. Instead, we’ll be having FITS at the church. Volleyball will be setup. LBC Weekly SPARK – August 11, 2010

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Hello to the LBC family and friends!

Greetings from San Jose! Christine, Eden, and I are coming to the end of our family vacation and it has been a wonderful week thus far meeting up with the San Jose church plant team. We had the opportunity to join them for their Sunday service this past weekend and the church is doing well. Everyone sends their greetings, of course!

Please continue to pray for the church plant as they continue on in their infancy. I’m sure things will start becoming more and more challenging for them as they get settled in and start having to adjust
to the new surroundings. Especially as things are significantly more expensive in San Jose than they are in San Diego, please pray that God would provide for them and help them in these early months.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Announcements

  1. LBC Luau – The all-church annual Luau is this Saturday at 10:00am at Mission Bay. The cost for the event is $5/person and kids are free! Come out for a tropical themed day at the Bay! It’ll be a great time with good food, fun, and fellowship! Be sure to wear your Hawaiian gear. Also, if you would be interested in renting a jet ski (additional cost involved), please contact Abram Kim by Thursday at noon (abram.kim@gmail.com). We’ll also have a catamaran for anyone who wants to sail around the Bay (no additional cost). You won’t want to miss out! Hopefully we’ll see you all this Saturday.
  2. Friday Night Bible Studies – The college/singles joint Bible study continues this Friday at 7:00pm at the church. Come out as our very own Tim Yu opens up the Word for us. The youth will also be meeting this Friday at 7:00pm at the home of Joyce Park.
  3. Kids’ Club – Don’t forget that the summer Kids’ Club continues to meet on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm at the church. All children going into preschool through 5th grade are welcome to participate! Invite your friends as we will be walking through the “I Am” statements of Christ from the Gospel of John. Contact Josh Liu for more information (liu.joshuac@gmail.com).
  4. FITS – We will be having our next Fun in the Sun Day on Sunday, August 22. This is just an informal time to enjoy the summer sun together as a church family! The youth ministry will be preparing lunch for the church for $5/adult and $3/child (ages 3-12).
  5. Vision Quest – We will be bringing back an old tradition on Friday, September 3 at 6:30pm at the church. Like in the days of old at LBC, we’ll be having a Vision Quest night. For those of you who don’t know what this is, it is a time for the church to come together, enjoy some fun together, and be reminded of the MVP. For this Vision Quest, we will be having a finger foods potluck and a music themed talent show. Bring a dish to share and if you have a song you would like to perform, whether singing or playing, please contact Pastor Patrick. Just for clarification: this is NOT a members only event. All are welcome to attend!
  6. Membership Class – Our next membership class will be on Saturday, September 11 from 9:00am-12:00pm and Sunday, September 12 from 1:00-4:00pm. Both classes are required for attendance. If you are interested in becoming a member at LBC or know of someone who might be interested, please contact Pastor Patrick for an application.
  7. Flocks – We are looking to start our monthly flocks in September if possible. If you would be interested in hosting a flock in your home, please contact Pastor Patrick and let him know as soon as possible. We also need to know how many people you would be able to host in your home (including kids!). Thanks!
