LBC Weekly SPARK – May 16, 2013

Dear LBC friends and family,

I hope you’re doing well and walking with the Lord. Last night, the single adults ministry looked at the topic of pride from Scripture. It is always convicting to reflect on this issue because pride is at the root of all our sin. Its focus is self – self-exaltation and even self-pity. It is when we refuse to live according to a God-orientation to our lives and instead set up a self-orientation that pride is at its height. Our pride says, “I am (or should be) the source, the accomplisher, and the benefactor of all that is good, right, or worthy of praise.” In other words, everything is from me, through me, and to me.

We need to strive to put our sinful pride to death. Instead of having ourselves at the center of all that we do, say, and think, we need to learn what it is to have a God-orientation to our lives. As we put off pride and arrogance, let’s put on humility and love. Consider this week how you can serve God and others.

There are many opportunities to be involved in one another’s lives and to encourage each other in the faith. Please read below for more details!

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

LBC Weekly SPARK – April 4, 2013

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC friends and family!

As planning continues for the LBC Los Angeles church plant, we are excited to see where and how the Lord leads this ministry in San Diego through the transitions. There are about thirty people who have committed to the church plant from San Diego, which means that a number of our ministries will be in need of greater help. Church planting has always been part of the fabric of this ministry since the very beginning, and each member joined the church to be a part of this church planting ministry. Obviously, not everyone can go to be a part of the team in Los Angeles, but being committed to church planting also involves those who stay in San Diego. Not only does the membership and leaders of LBC Los Angeles need our prayers and support, but the church here in San Diego will be counting on those who stay to step up and help with the work there will be to do once the church planting team departs.

In the past several weeks, we’ve already felt the loss of some of our members and we will continue to do so, but we praise God because He is moving and working through our church family to accomplish great things. This is what we all signed up for. We have said it from the very beginning that LBC San Diego is not going to be a place for those Christians who simply want a convenient and easy part in a church. All our members, going or staying, are called upon to work hard for the faith in the strength of the Lord. Let’s not grow complacent but push on making ourselves useful for the Lord and His kingdom. In the coming weeks and months, many opportunities for service will be made available for our members. Please consider how you might serve to be a blessing to your church family and to the community around us. As part of a church planting ministry, we need to always keep in mind that the work is not limited to those who are going. Let’s not grow weary of serving our God, but find strength in Him to work excellently for the sake of His glory and the salvation of souls.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Here are some upcoming events and ministries you can get involved with:

  1. Weekly Bible Studies. Don’t forget that all our regularly scheduled midweek Bible studies resume this week. Single Life meets on Wednesdays at 6:30pm. Grace Life and LKC meet on Thursdays at 6:30pm. Lumos Youth Ministry and College Life meet on Fridays at 7:00pm.
  2. Women’s Seminar. The next LBC women’s seminar is scheduled for April 13, from 9:00am-12:00pm. The theme for the seminar is “A Living Sacrifice.” Please sign up with Mrs. Grace Lee if you would like to attend (gracelee357@aol.com).
  3. LBC East Bay Inaugural Service. Our brothers and sisters at LBC East Bay will be celebrating their official inaugural service on Sunday, April 14, at 4:00pm, in the Alameda area. Please be in prayer for the church plant that God would be faithful to establish, provide for, and strengthen them. If you are able to travel up to support them, please let Pastor Patrick know so he can send ahead an estimated headcount for their preparations.
  4. Men’s Ministry. The men’s ministry has several events coming up in the next few weeks. We will get together to enjoy the NCAA Championship Basketball Game on Monday, April 8, at 6:00pm, at the church. There will be a Men’s Breakfast fellowship on Saturday, April 20, at 7:30am, addressing the theme: “Leadership: Being the Man God Calls Me to Be.” And Iron Men Fellowship signups will be taken until April 7. Sign up with Roger Alcaraz for these men’s ministry events (roger.alcaraz@gmail.com)!
  5. Members Meeting. We will be having a members meeting on Sunday, April 21, at 4:45pm. All members are highly encouraged to attend especially as we discuss a number of the transitions that will take place due to the LBCLA church plant. As always, dinner will be served.

by Stephen Rodgers

Many of you have noticed by now, but we’re dealing with a couple of minor technical issues while Kyle and crew finish the update for all the LBC San Diego websites.  If you haven’t checked out the new website and/or member’s area, you should give it a whirl. They’ve done an incredible job.

Here at the Beacon we’re about 99% up and running, but you may see the occasional glitch while resolve the few remaining issues.  So if a post appears at an odd time, or the verse pop-ups look a little funny, please keep calm and carry on.  We’re working on it.

Thanks!

Reading Your Bible in 2013

“…it is a sin and a shame not to know our own book or to understand the speech and words of our God…” (Martin Luther, from “To the Councilmen of All Cities in Germany That They Establish and Maintain Christian Schools”)

by Stephen Rodgers

As we begin a new year, many of us will once again embark upon that familiar adventure: the Bible reading plan. It’s something of a sad cliche in Christian circles that going solely by the state of our reading faithfulness (or lack thereof), by the time we die, we’ll have read Genesis to Exodus 20-ish about 50 times…and not much else.

I once had the opportunity to ask a bodybuilder who had trained for decades what the “best” workout was…and with a smile, he told me that “it’s the one that you actually do.”  In some ways, that’s a lot like reading the Bible.  Ultimately what matters is not the sophistication or particular structure of our Bible-reading plan, it’s that we actually are taking the time to daily immerse ourselves in the very word of God.

To make our shame even greater, we live in a time with unprecedented access to the Scriptures.  Consider this:

  • Unlike the Christians of apostolic and early patristic eras, we have the complete canon of Scripture, and not just whatever collection of NT books we were fortunate enough to gather.
  • Unlike the Christians of the medieval era, we don’t have to study foreign or dead languages just to be able to read the Bible. (To say nothing of the fact that we aren’t actively persecuted for daring to own a Bible in our native language either).
  • Unlike the Christians of the reformation period (and even the recent past), we don’t even have to rely solely on the Bible in bound and printed form.

The word of God has never been more available, which only compounds our guilt if we fail to take advantage of the riches that we’ve been given. Here at the Beacon, we’ve actually made a point of collecting a lot of material on the subject of Bible-reading plans. But if the prospect of digging through all that material to find one that’s the “best” for you gives you a headache…let me help you narrow it down and make it simple.  Just head on over to the ESV Reading Plans page and pick one.  They’ve got 10 to choose from, and they’ll even let you choose the format for delivery: RSS, iCal (format for calendars), a website, a printed index, or emailing it directly to you. Surely there’s some format there that can accommodate your schedule?

Like I said before…of all Christians throughout history, we are most without excuse.

LBC Weekly SPARK – December 12, 2012

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear family and friends of LBC,

I hope you are doing well and walking in the Lord. During this holiday season, I want to encourage you to do all you can to be a faithful witness of the gospel of Christ.  Opportunities abound all around us and yet too often we are content to see them pass us by. Because of our love for Christ and desire to see Him glorified, we ought to tell others about God’s saving grace. Who knows? Perhaps God would use your next conversation to save a soul. Think of the deep joy that comes from seeing a life transformed by the grace of God. Those who have no hope in this world could have true, lasting hope. Let’s do all we can to tell others of the love of Christ for the sake of His name!

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

  • Please pray for Alex and Maria Ko and their family as they continue to deal with Baby Eliana’s ongoing health needs.

LBC Weekly SPARK – September 27, 2012

Dear LBC family and friends,

I hope the week is off to a great start for you. A couple weeks ago we had a pretty momentous members meeting announcing the plans to plant a church in the Los Angeles area in the next year. I was so thankful to hear the enthusiastic response of our members because it showed once again how committed this congregation is to the MVP of LBC. We have said that we would be a church planting church and have done all we can to uphold this desire in accordance with God’s Word.

Some may be wondering why a church plant in Los Angeles is necessary. Aren’t there already good churches there? We announced at the members meeting, that a church in LA would be strategic because of its proximity to The Master’s Seminary. This could be instrumental in the training up of future pastors and leaders. Also, LA provides a more central location for all the California Lighthouse churches. But even without these factors in mind, it is a bit naive to think that there are a sufficient number of churches in LA. It is one of the most populated cities in America, and as we know too well, many churches do not equal many good churches. And even the good churches are not all committed to the MVP, and specifically church planting, in the way LBC is. Again, this isn’t to say that we believe we are the only church or even the greatest church, but we believe in what we are doing and want to continue to see the work spread throughout the surrounding regions and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).

I know that many were surprised to hear that elder Mike Chon and his family were planning to go and help Pastor John in the church planting effort. Many changes are going to be necessary in order to move forward. We don’t commit ourselves to church planting because it is easy or convenient. We do it because we love God and people, and want to see souls saved. So, though I’m sad that Mike and Caroline and the boys are planning to move away, I’m super excited that John will have good help and support (because he’s going to need it).

LBC San Jose and East Bay are also planning on losing much even in the fact that Pastor John is leading the church plant in LA. But we are completely confident in and excited for Pastor J. R. Cuevas to take the lead in San Jose, and that the East Bay church plant is in good hands with Pastor Jim Kang. Please continue to pray for our pastors and leaders and their families, that they would always depend on the Lord in all things and find their strength and sufficiency in Him. Please also pray that God would be gracious to give us fruitful ministries where people are being taught all that Christ commanded to the glory of God (Matt. 28:20).

At the members meeting, we were also happy to announce officially that the elders of LBC San Diego have nominated Johnny Kim as an elder. We are hoping to install him into leadership at the next members meeting. Please be praying for Johnny and Mimi as they take this time to carefully consider this nomination. Please also pray for Mimi as she continues in what has been a fairly difficult pregnancy.

So, it was a good members meeting. I can’t put into words how thankful I am for this church and ministry that I am given by the grace of God. Obviously in moving forward we have a lot to pray about, so let’s be faithful in it. Let’s pray that the name of Christ would be exalted and that the gospel of grace would go forth from us to the nations.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

Here are the announcements for this week. Please read through them all!

LBC Weekly SPARK – April 19, 2012

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC family and friends!

I hope you are doing well and walking in the Lord. This past Sunday, we heard a message from James 1:21 about the importance of receiving the implanted Word. This is what will help produce spiritual growth and ensure the ongoing process of sanctification in your life. So the obvious question of application is: Are you taking in God’s Word? We hear so many messages about the practical importance of Scripture intake, and all true believers will attest to the necessity of being in God’s Word. It really comes down to being disciplined in this. It is about loving the Lord and praising Him for His revelation, receiving it with meekness, and learning to apply its principles. Like I mentioned on Sunday, we can all appreciate the simplicity of James’ message. Consider this an encouragement to be in the Word today, and to persevere in it for the rest of the week, month, and year.

In His grace,

Pastor Patrick

LBC Weekly SPARK – February 9, 2012

by Pastor Patrick Cho

Dear LBC family and friends!

Many of you know that this past weekend, LBC San Jose celebrated its one year anniversary. It was a wonderful time of rejoicing in the Lord’s faithfulness to the church. Our family had the honor and privilege of being able to go up to minister to the San Jose church family and it was tremendously encouraging! It was particularly great to hear testimonies of those who even recently came to know the Lord Jesus through the work of ministry there. It was a refreshing time of fellowship over a very busy weekend. We came back tired but deeply encouraged.

As the sending church of LBCSJ, we also have great reason to celebrate together with the church family up north. We have seen great returns on the investment made to send a team to San Jose. The church is vibrant and thriving. Certainly not everything has been easy. There have been some great challenges and trials with the work, but the members of LBCSJ persevere and remain faithful to the MVP and Peacemaker Pledge. God certainly has been answering prayers and many lives are being affected through this church.

Please continue to pray for Pastor John and Angela Kim, Pastor JR and Kathy Cuevas, and the rest of the leadership of LBCSJ. Pray that the members would be passionate for the vision of the church and would be active participants in the work of ministry to the glory of God. Pray that the light of the gospel would shine brightly through that ministry and that God would use them as a bright beacon of His truth and love. There still is a lot of work to be done, but we are thankful for all that the Lord has already accomplished.

Together as one voice, we want to wish LBC San Jose a very happy anniversary!

Dying to know Him,

Pastor Patrick

Here are the ministry opportunities for this week:

  1. Friday Night Bible Studies – Don’t forget that the college and youth groups have Bible study this Friday evening at 7:00pm at the church. Bring a Bible, notebook, and pen and be prepared to study God’s Word together. Invite a friend!
  2. College/Singles Broomball – Friday night at 11:30pm, the college and singles ministries will be having a special broomball event. This is a great opportunity to spend some time together to get to know each other a little better over a fun event! The cost is $5/person and the event will be held at the San Diego Ice Arena in Mira Mesa. If you have any questions about this event, please contact Eugene Park (e1park@gmail.com).
  3. Men’s Breakfast – We will be having our long awaited next men’s breakfast this Saturday, February11, at 8:00am. All men are invited to attend! Please bring a breakfast item to share. Juice will be provided. These times have really been a great chance to fellowship together and grow as men of God.
  4. Membership Class – Our next membership class will be this weekend. It is a two-part class on Saturday, February11 from 10:00-1:00pm, and Sunday, February12 from 1:00-4:00pm. Both sessions are required for membership. If you are interested in coming out, please email Pastor Patrick for an application.
  5. Single Life Retreat – Our annual singles retreat will be on March 16-18 at Pine Valley Bible Conference Center. This year, Pastor John Kim of LBC San Jose will be our speaker and will be addressing the theme of Christian contentment. The cost for the retreat is only $140/person. You can sign up with Brian Song.
  6. Flocks – Each month, we take a break from our regularly scheduled midweek fellowships and meet instead in regional flocks throughout the community. This month, flocks will meet from February 29 to March 3. More information about flocks can be found at the church website.
  7. Sunday School – Our new session of Sunday School classes will begin this weekend! Sunday School classes are provided to help equip the body for the work of ministry. Your attendance is encouraged so that you can better understand biblical truths and work to apply them to your lives. The classes offered this term are:

Introduction to Biblical Counseling (Instructor: Josh Liu) – This class will present a biblical approach to address life’s problems and to provide a solid foundation from which to offer sound counsel to others.

Fundamentals of the Faith (Instructors: Min Kim and Steve Preslar) – This ongoing class walks through the basics of the Christian faith. It is a required class for members of Lighthouse Bible Church.

Grace Life Ministry – This is a ministry for our married couples and parents. In this class, we look at biblical principles to strengthen the home. Currently, we are walking through a book by Dr. John Barnett called Word Filled Families Walk in Truth.
